I’m not 100% sure it’s true, but I’ve read that they wrote that song after one of the band members was watching a suicidal person on the news. Gives it a pretty morbid spin, and kind of makes me hate Van Halen more for more than just their music.

S ome truth to that - but really much more positive. The intent of the lyric was to say people are going to do and say some terrible stuff to you - but it doesn’t matter because you are strong enough to work through it.  The history of the song is interesting too - Eddie actually wrote the synth lyric initially and David didn’t like it initially thinking it wouldn’t be marketable for a rock band.  But David actually ended up writing the lyric for it.
